The 2012 “Books I started but didn’t finish” Reading Challenge

The goal:

  • Commit to finish some or all of the books you began to read in 2011 (or before) and never completed.

Prizes:

  • I will not give away prizes or otherwise motivate people to complete their goals for this challenge.
  • Instead, I encourage you to self-motivate.
  • Keep your list central on your blog (or elsewhere) and commit to buy yourself some sort of reward when you finish the task. (A book? A bookmark? Whatever you know will inspire YOU.)

The rules:

  • Post a list of the books you began reading in 2011 (or at some point in your life) and never finished reading. (Maybe even say why you stopped reading!)
  • You can list as few or as many titles as you intend to complete in 2012. One or twenty or a hundred – it’s YOUR challenge.
  • You can include whatever genres you please in this challenge.
  • It doesn’t matter how you go about finishing these books. You can combine them with any other challenges.
  • You do not need a blog to participate. You can simply list the books you want to finish in the comments below.
  • List the prize you will gift yourself when you complete this challenge in your challenge post (to make it official.)
  • Write yourself a little manifesto about how you intend to approach these left-over books.
  • Commit to finish your list by the end of 2012.
  • You are NOT allowed to stress if it takes longer than 2012 to finish your list! Just commit again in 2013!!
  • Leave a link to your post in the comments below.

That’s it! :)

My list:

I began reading several books in 2011 that I lacked the time to finish:

  • War & Peace – I finished half of this book and then stopped in the summer, when school overwhelmed me. I’m committing to finish with a few others in 2012.
  • Vanity Fair – I started this in the spring of 2011 and read about half. I have no idea why I stopped. Other books and commitments kept calling. I KNOW this book will be a favorite and I can’t wait to finish it.
  • Moby-Dick – I read the first several chapters of this in the winter of 2011 and ADORED it. I ran out of time to give it my full attention due to the holidays and my Transcendentalist Event. I will finish this with pleasure in 2012!
  • Emerson’s Essays – I barely started this. I read three of the essays and realized the writing was intense and required more than a quick skim. I decided to put it off to 2012 so I can give it more of my attention.
  • 50 Great Short Stories - I read all but the last 100 pages! This one should be easy to finish in 2012. I have no excuse for not finishing, beyond the fact that short stories just don’t seem to call me nearly as much as novels.
  • Anna Karenina – I read half with Wallace’s group in October/November 2011, and then lost interest just before the holidays, mostly because it’s such a heavy story and I craved something lighter. I like the book and hope to finish in 2012.
  • Montaigne’s Essays – I’ve read half!! Like the other books listed above, this one just required too much from me while I was trying to prepare for graduation in the summer of 2011. I’d intended to read it over a year and stopped mid-summer due to time. I’m excited to get back to Montaigne.
  • Madame Bovary – I started reading this one to prove my professor wrong in his assertion that Kate Chopin copied Gustave Flaubert when she wrote The Awakening. I realized at several chapters in that that’s the wrong attitude to have while reading. (I was against Flaubert, for some reason. Pumped up to like Chopin better!) So I stopped reading until I could do it for the merit of the novel itself, separate from Chopin. I think I’m ready. :-)
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin – #99 on my Day Zero List was to visit the Harriet Beecher Stowe house while reading her novel. So I read the first 46 pages in July and visited the house, then I pretty much forgot to finish reading. I like the book for its historical significance as well as the story, and I’m excited to get back to it.

My prize: I’m going to buy myself something off my wish list when I complete this challenge.

My manifesto: I will read these books because I want to enjoy the stories — not because I’m scrambling and feeling guilty!! If I have books left-over in 2012, I’ll apply the same laissez-faire attitude. :-)

Anybody with me on this?

  1. Hahaha, I saw that comment and was hoping you would start this!

I never finished Vanity Fair either, so that one will definitely be an option for this. Same with Lord Jim. I started it back in Feb and only made it 20 pages in before wanting to stab my eyes out. Oh! And Kim!

    I guess I’m in. I’ll go make a post right now…:)

  2. This is a great challenge… but there are only two books, in my many years of reading, that I started and didn’t finish… and there was a reason I didn’t finish them. Haha! Good luck! I’ll be rooting for you.

  3. A good idea! If I had anything left over I’d have loved to join this one. As it stands I think I have only 2 short story books (by Poe and Murakami) that need to be completed. However, I not particularly in a hurry to finish them within a stipulated time. I don’t mind dragging those to out for a few years if it should be! :D The other books I left unfinished in 2011 were books I simply couldn’t complete. They just weren’t my type or they didn’t draw me in.

However, I’ve been thinking about this yesterday and it occured to me that before I began book blogging I never ever thought of completing books by the end of a year. Time had no value in my reading. I could pick up a book whenever I felt like it and drag it on into the new year. Heck, I could even pick up a book on New Year’s Eve and complete it on New Year — straddling two years, so to speak. Now, I have so many books I’m dying to pick off the shelf and begin reading but I keep telling myself I can’t do that as yet!…not with the challenges I’m taking part in in 2012!!! *sigh* That’s the tough part…

Anyway, all the best with your challenge, Jill! You’ve got some awesome stuff on your list that really needs to be savoured. :)

    • … before I began book blogging I never ever thought of completing books by the end of a year. Time had no value in my reading. I could pick up a book whenever I felt like it and drag it on into the new year.

This is such a great point, Risa! I love “time had no value in my reading.” It’s true! Book blogging is awesome, and it truly does keep me focused on finishing the books I start. But it’s important, I think, not to let the lists or challenges overwhelm the experience.

(Says, she, as she plans participating in another two challenges!)

  4. This made me laugh so much when I saw you decided to do this! I’m just glad you didn’t ask me to host it…

I wasn’t going to join any more year-long challenges for next year, but since two of my books for the TBR challenge qualify, I’ll join in! I’ll try to get a post up later today. And maybe I’ll even admit to how long ago it’s been since I originally started the books….

  6. As soon as I saw Amanda’s comment I wondered if you’d accept the not-so-subtle suggestion and was delighted to find out you are :) I love the idea, especially the laid back approach to it. I’ll leave you another comment when I write my post.

  8. Great idea! I’m in. I’ve listed four books, and I’m thinking about my “manifesto. I love the emphasis on guilt-free!

  9. :-) I actually created a list of books that I want to finish reading but I never considered making it a challenge! Great idea.

  10. OMG!! I so needed to find this challenge. LOL… I have so many books that I have picked and never got back to. At least 20 books!! (hangs head in shame)

  11. Haha we even have one Book in common on our Lists and some of your others are on my TBR List.

Good Luck for this Challenge everyone!

I have 2 books started but never finished, both from 2009.
    1. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell was a summertime read-along hosted by the public library, “Magical Summer”. I loved the book – until about 75% of the way through, a chapter was so awful I put it down. If I’m ever going to finish it, may as well be next year.
    2. The Alienist was a book club choice I didn’t read in time for the monthly discussion. Afterward there was no urgency…but again, if I’m ever going to read it, why not 2012.

The sense of relief at finishing one or both books will be reward enough.

  14. This is the best idea! I’m joining! My sign-up post will go up in the next couple weeks and I’ll come back to link.

  15. what a great idea. I’ve been pretty good in 2011. When I quit a book it’s because I decided not to read it. But I’ll ponder the books I’ve started and see if there is any I do want to finish.

  16. I’m in! I’m reading the book I’ve chosen because a reader passionately defended it to em when I abandoned it. I’m curious to see what I missed.

  20. This challenge is perfect for me because I have so many books I’ve started and never finished! I’m going to aim for ten this year (listed here: http://wp.me/pKEOq-16G)

  21. What a great challenge. This will totally inspire me to finished all those books I started last year and never finished. Perfect! Here is my list.

  22. I have four books I started last year and never finished. I’m working on those. Hopefully I can get them finished early in the year.

  23. This is a terrific idea for a challenge! I’m starting with just 3 books on my list, but I’ll probably add one or two. Thanks for hosting and Happy New Year, too!

  28. OMG. I’m so glad you found me that I could just break out my copy of Pilgrim’s Progress and read it. Or NOT.

I love your Walden Pond header. I’ll bet you have made the pilgrimage. I can’t wait to look in my book rack to see what’s there. I know that I need to finish Eden’s Outcasts and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, for starters.

I hope you’ll sign up for the Louisa Challenge with us!

    • Thank you so much for the offer! But I’m doing all of these challenges this year, and can’t possibly fit in another! Like I said over at your place, though, I do intend to read a couple works by (or about) Alcott this year (March and Little Women – reread), and I’ll be following along on your project. I think it’s awesome! :)

I NEED to read Eden’s Outcasts — but that too will have to wait until next year at least.

I have not yet made the pilgrimage to Concord, Orchard House, Walden Pond, the Old Manse, etc. But I MUST. Cool story? My ancestors are from Concord. I once found my ancestor’s name listed near “Alcott” on a town document in Concord. I don’t think it’s “the” Alcotts, because as I understand it, they weren’t living in Concord yet. Still cool though. :D

  29. I’ve just finished “The Conservationist” by Nadine Gordimer – I might not have gone back to it if it hadn’t been for this challenge, so thanks for the incentive! Hope everyone else is doing okay with their choices.
